Reading Response #5:  Research Proposal

My research proposal topic will be on the community, I will be focusing on suicide. I've never had to deal with someone actually committing suicide, however, a family member has come close twice. On one account I have been affected with someone killing themselves because of my friends. Even though this person wasn't my friend I often wonder what or if there is anything I could've done to help. When I hear about suicide it makes me really upset because I know how awful people can be and that being the reason someone kills them-self is daunting. I just wish people would see how much value they hold. I plan to gather information on ways to help people in distress and depression, even when those two things aren't clear to others. I want to know if there can be a psychological disorder convincing the unfortunate ones that suicide is the way to go. I just want to find out why this has to be the way when there are so many other roads to take. I don't' have any sources as of right now, but I will be using reliable websites and our counselors here at Parkview.

Reading Response Four: Multigenre

Mythology to Reality is a series of emails between an English teacher and a student. There are tons of examples of mythology pieces that do not makes sense .This sample kind of threw me off. I was highly confused every time I read it... which was three times. I chose this paper because I really enjoy mythology, but of course it was just a reading full of disappointment.

Reading Response Tres: United Nations Millennium Developmental Goals

While reading the Millennium Goals, goal five stood out the most to me. Goal five is about Maternal Morality and it states that in 1990 there were 400 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births. In comparison, to 210 deaths in 2010 meaning "Globally, maternal morality has declined by 47 percent over the last two decades".  This morality can be prevented with "adequate nutrition, proper health care, including access to family planning, the presence of a skilled birth attendant during delivery and emergency obstetric care". I was interested in this goal because I believe every life is born and given for a reason. These new lives that women are bringing into this world everyday should be valued; not at just the moment when they're brought into this world, but since they were a fetus. Maternal Morality cannot only be prevented from what the government can offer, but from the parents nurturing properly as well. I feel like parents of all ages need to be aware of what they could possibly be putting their baby at risk of.

Redo Reading Response:

The article included examples and explanations of how verbs can differentiate the meaning of a sentence. As an example in the article, "Joe acts nice" the verb "acts" is copular suggesting that “nice” is modifying Joe." However, in  “Joe acts nicely,” “acts” is an action verb, which we modify with an adverb to state that Joe is a skilled thespian." Although, both sentences use the same verb you can change the meaning of a sentence by adding an adverb. In the text it also says you can't end a sentence with a proposition, that is a myth. Some examples to prove this myth is wrong are:
“The preposition at the end has always been an idiomatic feature of English. It would be pointless to worry about the few who believe it is a mistake.” — Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary of English Usage
“Superstition.” — H.W. Fowler
“Not only is the preposition acceptable at the end, sometimes it is more effective in that spot than anywhere else.” — The Elements of Style
“Superstition. … Good writers don’t hesitate to end their sentences with prepositions if doing so results in phrasing that seems natural.” — Garner’s Modern American Usage"
I am not very familiar with propositions, but what I gathered from this article is how to use verbs more efficiently. Another example, “Jane appears quickly” is what I would use to suggest she materializes fast. “Jane appears quick”, meaning she is smart. An improper use of this grammatical rule is, "She is a quickly thinker.", you wouldn't have to add "-ly" because "quick" is an adjective describing thinker the proper sentence "She is a quick thinker".
Just because Kanye West seems to always say it the best.

Start Something That Matters:

A story that stood out to me was Fight Child Literacy with Fun Kid's Books. This story is about a father who didn't like something that was supposed to benefit his children, so he did something about it. The books that he was reading to his kids were boring and he decided to write his own. I chose this story because I think parents connecting with your children through books would be an important aspect, instead of just handing them a device and letting the child download whatever app they want.

The Good Squad have come together to help preventable diseases from spreading. They were inspired by how damaging some of the diseases can be to people. It is a non-profitable charitable organization by raising money that is needed to improve global health. I think this is a great organization and how they're helping others is very impressive.

Food Shift is a group that is helping America. "40% of the food produced in the US is wasted while 50 million Americans are food insecure." They are in the process of making a way to reduce the amount of food that is being wasted. In doing this, they have planned with a grocer to employ people to work for Food Shift to help feed others. This helps the grocer with tax deduction while the income helps the employees financially and individually skill-building wise.

My passion has always been to help others. Mostly because whenever I need help I want people to be there for me so I try to be there for them. I appreciate the people who serve for our country and protect us daily. Whether it is to being a police officer or being over seas, I have really thought about my life and what I want to do with it. I've always wanted an occupation that I can be proud of and know that what I'm doing is going to help the world or a part of it. I want to become an FBI Agent. That is my passion and I long everyday to pursue it.
